Sound and Lighting

The sound and lighting systems employed at Polesden Lacey over its many seasons, have changed as dramatically as its entertainment productions.

We have always tried to ensure that audiences get the best possible sight and sound of our productions. This picture shows one of the scaffold towers that supported horns and column speakers, in use in a production of the 1960's.
We used to operate from a mixture of sheds, and tents, and caravans to house the control equipment needed to support the productions. In recent years, we have used our mobile control room, built to our own design, and seen here being commissioned prior to the season start.

Lighting systems have changed from manually controlled boards with only two presets, to sophisticated computer controlled systems linked digitally to intelligent dimming and switching devices.

Within the open-air theatre site, cabling is run in underground ducts, which link the stage, lighting and sound towers and the control room. A few years ago, the only electricity on site was mains supplied, and we could use only two phases of 8Kw for lighting and one phase of  8Kw for catering and sound. Now, with the introduction of almost silent 3-phase diesel generators, we can use whatever power is necessary to ensure that the audience sees and hears the show to their best.

Over the years, we have established working relationships with a number of suppliers for lighting and sound engineering. To find out more about them click below.
